Boating, Beaching, and Shopping

Julie booked a 3-hour boat rental today. It was a “no license needed” boat, so relatively small (but large enough to go onto the Mediterranean on a calm day) and with only a 15 HP motor that actually seemed to have a governor on it (“wide open” was still “moving a pretty plodding pace”).

We motored out and down the beach, dropping anchor a couple of times to swim and cool off. But, both Julie and Lucy were feeling a bit motion sick, so our 3-hour rental wound up being more like 2.5 hours.

After that, we walked to the beach, rented a couple of umbrellas and four chairs, and lazed there for a couple of hours.

A taxi ride back to the apartment and showers for all, followed by the three “kids” heading out to go clothes shopping, while Julie made a final run at British Airways regarding her checked bag (the upshot: it made it to Valencia today but will not clear customs before we leave tomorrow, so it’s going to return to Heathrow from Valencia and then make its way back to Columbus; the good news: British Airways should be providing some compensation for the various clothing that Julie and Alana had to buy to get buy without a major piece of luggage for a week).

After Julie finished with British Airways, she and Tim went for a stroll and a drink, followed by one stop at a store for Julie to buy another piece of clothing (she went in expecting to buy the green dress she’d seen yesterday, but it was no longer available, so she wound up with a white top; go figure).

The group all met up for what turned out to be a pretty delicious meal at a Sardinian restaurant near the apartment and then called it a night.

An interesting/memorable experience of the day:

  • Benton: The experience of shopping with Alana whereby she fawned over a dress, didn’t purchase it, but then required the group to backtrack later so that she could actually make the purchase.

  • Tim: After repeatedly expressing hesitation about renting a power boat, and Julie insisting that she was totally comfortable driving boats because she’d driven them all the time…having Julie tell the rental place that I was totally comfortable driving the boat and then having me both start with and finish the outing at the helm.

A bit of hard data from the day:
  • According to Benton's Apple Watch, he took 16,648 steps over the course of the day, covering 7.9 miles and burning 195 active calories.
  • According to Tim's Fitbit, he started the day having slept for 6.5 hours, and he walked 10,148 steps over the course of the day.
