Day of Repose

We decided yesterday that today would be a rest day. We slept in, but both got up around the same time—some time between 8:00 and 9:00—and both went for a run (separately—Benton was going to run farther and faster). We came back to the flat, cooled off a bit, and then walked to a nearby supermarket to load up on some groceries.

The “dark variety of tomatoes”—legitimately nestled in between more typical looking tomatoes—turned out to be…plums. So, the breakfast we (mostly Benton) cooked up was an onion-heavy omelet, along with fresh fruit, some hard meat, and some bread.

We wrapped up breakfast…shortly before 1:00 PM, so our chill day was shaping up to be just that! By the time we showered and did a little reading and headed back out, we were at peak siesta time, so many shops were closed. We did hit a farmacia for some sunscreen (we asked for “protector solar?” And the pharmacist responded with, “Yes,” so we’d hit one of the rare venues where the response to “habla ingles?” was not “un pequito”), but then meandered a bit more before returning the flat for our own mini-siesta.

We headed back out around 6:00 or 7:00, stopped and had a drink (see Benton’s memorable experience), then went for a walk that took us over the river via the old bridge, north to the next bridge, and then back over the river and back to the mosque. We grabbed dinner near there and then walked back to the flat without consulting Google Maps at all (to Benton’s credit) and called it a night by 11:30.

An interesting/memorable experience of the day:

  • Benton: researching Spanish drinks and deciding to order a “mosto” (some sort of grape juice drink) and getting, instead, a Monster energy drink.

  • Tim: the peach-like fruit we bought that looks like a really short, squat apple, but seems to actually be some sort of peach (Paraguayo Carne Blanca…Paraguayan white meat? The “white meat” describes the inner color of the fruit)

A bit of hard data from the day:
  • According to Benton's Apple Watch, he took 20,280 steps over the course of the day, covering 11.2 miles and burning 1,280 active calories.
  • According to Tim's Fitbit, he started the day having slept for 7.7 hours, and he walked 18,410 steps over the course of the day.
