Windmill Lanes Recording, Phoenix Park, Hurling

The Famine Memorial in Dublin

Alas! The title has a double meaning! What hit Benton two nights ago hit Tim last night, so he was up and aggressively emptying both his colon and his stomach in the middle of the night. Unfortunately, our Dublin flat is sufficiently small that Kim got to hear that (she thought it was Benton).

This led to another slow-ish start to the day, but we headed to Windmill Lane Recording Studio for a tour, which was pretty neat. They’re most closely associated with U2, but they have also recorded countless other artists (Van Morrison, Sinéad O’Connor, Elvis Costello, Kylie Minotaur, The Spice Girls, Kate Bush, The Cranberries, Metallica, Depeche Mode, The Jonas Brothers, Ed Sheehan, and even Kris Kristofferson!) and albums that have gone gold and platinum.

We then started walking towards Phoenix Park, but Tim was feeling sufficiently under the weather that he cut out and headed back to the flat for a nap while Benton and Kim continued to the park, which included checking out a recreational polo match and the rowing area there. They logged a lot of steps!

Today was the semi-final match of the All-Ireland GAA Hurling championship, which was played in Croke Stadium just a few blocks from our flat. So, the fans pre-gaming were out and about before the 5:30 game. We intentionally headed to a pizza joint that an Irish native (living in Italy for the past year) who Tim knows professionally had recommended. She had noted that the restaurant showed GAA matches (lonnnng before we had any idea there would be GAA matches occurring, much less a semi-final game), so we timed our meal around that and watched it while eating pizza and Googling the rules of the game. We think we might actually be following the sport from the U.S. next season—it’s a pretty neat game.

It’s off to Malaga by plane early tomorrow morning, so it’s an early night.

An interesting/memorable experience of the day:

  • Benton: The recording studio tour

  • Tim: the recording studio tour—the size/weight of af a single tape from the old 24-track analog recording system

A bit of hard data from the day:
  • According to Benton's Apple Watch, he took 28,066 steps over the course of the day, covering 13.2 miles and burning 1,270 active calories.
  • According to Tim's Fitbit, he started the day having slept for 6.5 hours, and he walked 13,494 steps over the course of the day.
