Kayaking, Biking, Waffles and Crepes, a Free Zoo

Today’s main activity was a kayaking trip—Benton and Lucy in a tandem kayak and Tim in a solo one—down the Saône, around the Confluence, and then briefly up the Rhône. It was a windy day, and a bit cooler than it has been, so pleasant temperature-wise, and very easy paddling downwind + with the current for the bulk of the trip…and a stiff headwind and against the current for the last 200 meters up the Rhône to the takeout!

We ate lunch near the takeout and then biked up to Lézard du Parc de la Tête d’Or for the waffles and crepes (a Simon strong recommendation) and the free zoo (with giraffes!) that we had tried to do on Monday, but for which we had arrived too late (and then the zoo is closed on Tuesdays).

One more bike ride from there brought us back to the apartment where we did administrative tasks (planning aspects of future legs of this whole endeavor) before heading out for dinner and then walking over to Old Lyon to make another pass at the ice cream shop that we had stopped in initially on Sunday (another Simon recommendation, and well worth multiple visits).

An interesting/memorable experience of the day:

  • Benton: The waiter sitting down with us at lunch (to help us figure out the menu)

  • Tim: Lucy’s determination to treat a heavy AF 3-speed city bike as a 1-speed…and then noting that her quads were fatigued. The different colors of the Saône and the Rhône and how you could see them coming together at the Confluence.

A bit of hard data from the day:
  • According to Benton's Apple Watch, he took 15,342 steps over the course of the day, covering 6.9 miles and burning 1,251 active calories.
  • According to Tim's Fitbit, he started the day having slept for 6.3 hours, and he walked 18,519 steps over the course of the day.
