A Car Ride and Two Trains to Reach Avignon

We got up at 7:00 this morning, grabbed breakfast at a bakery in Torla-Ordesa, and then hit the road for the 4-hour drive back to Barcelona, where we returned the rental car. We then grabbed lunch at the very Panera-like “Pan & Company” chain that we’d seen all over the place, and then caught our train from Barcelona to Nime. The train was delayed en route (by the wildfires, we think) such that we thought we were going to miss our 37-minute connecting train from Nime to Avignon. Not to worry! That train ultimately was delayed by 1.5 hours! In short, we spent a lot of time sitting (in cars and on trains) and a lot of time standing and waiting (for trains to arrive).

Our AirBnB host picked us up at the train station and took us to the apartment. It was during that short drive that we learned we had arrived in Avignon during the 3rd week of a 3-week performing arts festival that is apparently one of the oldest (started in 1947) and largest in Europe!

We got settled into the AirBnB, walked down to the old city (where the festival is) to grab dinner, and then walked back and collapsed for the night.

An interesting/memorable experience of the day:

  • Benton: how ridiculously well-stocked the AirBnB is

  • Tim: Lucy’s ability (tendency?) to fall asleep quickly and soundly in any moving vehicle (today, it was in the car and on the train)

A bit of hard data from the day:
  • According to Benton's Apple Watch, he took 10,083 steps over the course of the day, covering 4.4 miles and burning 604 active calories.
  • According to Tim's Fitbit, he started the day having slept for 5.7 hours, and he walked 8,549 steps over the course of the day.
